Poor, hasty and arduous: this trio of words describes the third installment of the Resident Evil trilogy, “Extinction”.
“Resident Evil: Extinction” follows the aftermath of the Umbrella Corporation’s T-virus which was let loose on Raccoon City unknowingly spreading it throughout the world. The aftermath has left the world a bleak and dismal place to live inhabited by millions, if not billions, of zombies. Alice (Milla Jovovich), whom is unwilling to endanger the lives around her, is struggling to survive seeking the Umbrella Corporation to try and close the door that was opened so many years before.
Her relentless battle leads her toward the survivors of a convoy where she encounters a previous partner, Carlos Olivera, (Oded Fehr) and the convoy’s leader Claire Redfield (Ali Larter). Together they scour the desert, mainly Las Vegas, for food, gas, and supplies to make it toward Alaska, a place where the T-Virus has reportedly not infected.
The acting, dialogue and storyline in this science-fiction thriller are poor. It lacks substance beyond help and is in desperate need of a tune up if there is going to be another sequel, yes I said it another sequel. It’s a no-brainer that this franchise is willing to make more movies since the prequels grossed massive amounts of money with a bodacious babe kicking some zombie butt.
This lack of substance leads this writer to believe that this film was hastily put together. There are multiple special effects used monotonously throughout the film and one of the most important elements of the first Resident Evil movie is used as a crutch in the new one.
With a title like “Extinction” one would assume there would be some sort of ending, but there is none. This arduous feeling sits with you after you walk out and you feel very disappointed for spending money that could be put to better use later that night.
Let there be some light to this film as there are very few heroine roles within the movie industry. Milla Jovovich and Ali Larter team up as one beautiful pair that use all means possible to kill zombies ruthlessly and relentlessly.
So if you are going to see this film please put all preconceived notions aside, buy your popcorn and tasty beverage and be ready for an hour and a half of eye candy.
